Summer in South Florida brings more consistent weather; including lighter winds. This is the best time of year to get a grand slam (bonefish, permit, tarpon) in Biscayne Bay. Summer is the best time to target tailing bonefish and when we get the most shots at permit. The Tarpon fishing is still great in the summer months with some fish still migrating on the ocean, but more resident tarpon sticking around the bay for the next few months.
The fishing in the Everglades is red hot during the summer months. The Park is loaded with tons of baby tarpon (5-20lbs.) with a good number 80lb + tarpon still hanging around. The flats in the park are packed with tailing redfish and this is when the snook spawn on the beaches out front in Florida Bay providing consistent snook fishing opportunities.
Fall is a transition time of year in South Florida with fronts starting to make their way down south and temps. starting to change; the heat and humidity of Summer gives way to more temperate and comfortable conditions.
The fall mullet run is in full swing and the influx of bait into Biscayne bay brings new fishing opportunities. The wrecks in Biscayne Bay start to get loaded with Mutton Snapper and Grouper. The cooling water temps bring out the biggest bonefish of the year with 10lb. + fish showing up regularly. Some baby tarpon still around but Permit fishing starts to slow down.
The Everglades is still fishing great with the cooler water temps allowing fish to stay on the flats all day; providing great sight fishing for redfish and snook. There are still plenty on baby tarpon around with the backcountry starting the get better with the fish starting to work there way into the backcountry after spending the summer out front due to the extremely hot weather conditions of Summer. Other species start to show up with the bait arriving including, Spanish Mackerel, Bluefish, Tripletail, Black Drum, Sheepshead, Etc
Winter is one of my favorite times of year in South Florida. Biscayne Bay still fishes great we just have to time our days on the water with the cold fronts the pass through this time of year. The temps. can drop into the high 40's or 50's directly after a front with temps getting back into the 70's and 80's a couple days later. The bonefishing is still very good on the warmer on the warmer days, but we also have some other species that show up in the winter including Giant Barracuda, Spanish Mackerel, Sea-Trout, and Redfish.
This is the time of year when the Everglades shines. The cooler water temps. kill off all the microorganism and bacteria so the water is extremely clear; combine that with the extreme low tides of winter and you have the perfect recipe for great fishing. This is the time of year where you can catch crazy numbers of redfish and snook not to mention the addition of Sea-Trout, Black Drum, Sheepshead, Spanish Mackerel, Cobia, and Triple Tail. Winter also has some of the best Tarpon fishing of the year. During those hot and calm days (which we get 10 or so a winter) the Tarpon fishing in the backcountry is as good as it gets; casting at "flaoting" fish that eagerly eat anything in front of them.
TARPON, TARPON, TARPON
This is the time of year where everyone thinks about Giant Tarpon
(100lbs.+) swimming in crystal clear water. This is the only place on earth that gives you the number of opportunities to catch the fish of a lifetime. The waters around Biscayne Bay offers sight fishing to strings of Giant Tarpon swimming down the clear water ocean flats found no-where else. This also the time of year to catch giant bonefish. With everybody concentrating on Tarpon, the Bonefishing flats are almost empty and you can pretty much fish where ever you want which rarely happens other times of the year.
The Tarpon fishing in the Everglades is also as good as it gets this time of year. The fish in Florida Bay swim down the edges of banks as well as laying up in the basins out front of Flamingo. There are hundreds of spots to look for Tarpon in the Everglades so your always able to get away from the crowds and find some secret spot all to your self. Add in the Redfish and Giant Snook that show up this time of year and you can't go wrong.
